And that’s a wrap for filming! Filmmakers from around the world have responded enthusiastically to the Quantum Shorts call for entries. We received some 224 films from 52 different countries. Submissions closed on 1 December 2020.
With the hard work finished, filmmakers now have to wait for news. Our shortlisting panel is reviewing the entries. They will be judging the films on criteria including the link to quantum physics, storyline, and quality of filming. At the end of the shortlisting process, we will announce up to ten finalists. The judges on our shortlisting panel are scientific and museum professionals from our scientific and screening partners. They bring not only diverse scientific backgrounds, from dark matter research to building quantum devices, but also experience in filmmaking and theatre. Many of them have judged for Quantum Shorts before.
New to the shortlisting panel are Jerome Chee and Ruth Hardy. Jerome is the Moving Images programmer at the ArtScience Museum in Marina Bay Sands, Singapore, and Ruth is the Communications and Outreach Officer for the UK Quantum Communications Hub. Welcome! We are glad to have their expertise for the difficult task ahead. You can read more about the panel here.
While the shortlisting panel is at work, we will continue to share quantum news and happenings on our social media and newsletters. So follow us on Facebook and Twitter, and subscribe to our newsletter for more quantum. You may also wish to take a dive into our film archives to see where past winners and finalists of the film festival have taken quantum ideas. For a longer read for the holidays, you can find our Quantum Shorts book online or check out the resources we recommend.
Kudos and thank you to the filmmakers who have entered films to the Quantum Shorts festival this year. We are always amazed by the dedication and creativity on show. We should be back with exciting news next year, ready to announce the finalists in January 2021. Stay tuned and happy holidays.
