Shortlisting underway

January 15, 2024

Our last flash fiction call is now closed! Nobody said this was going to be easy, so kudos to all the writers who managed to meet our deadline on 8 January 2024. We received some 650 submissions. All the eligible stories are now up on our website.

Writers now have a chance to make the shortlist, although they have to wait in uncertainty for a while. Our shortlisting panel is hard at work to pick just ten stories. They will judge the stories based on their storytelling, creative use of the phrase “nobody said this was going to be easy” and connections to quantum physics.

The shortlisting panel brings passion about science communication and expertise in theoretical and experimental quantum physics to the task. We welcome two new judges, Charles Woffinden and Kian van der Enden, to the panel this year. Having previously worked for a decade in the space industry, Charles is now an experimental physicist at the University of Queensland and the Australian Research Council Centre of Excellence for Engineered Quantum Systems (EQUS) conducting research on Bose–Einstein condensates and emerging quantum technologies. Kian is building the Quantum Internet at QuTech. In his free time, he is an active visual media consumer, from informative YouTube videos to award-winning movies and guilty-pleasure reality TV shows.

Stay tuned to observe the results of the shortlisting panel’s deliberations with us. The shortlist will be announced in March 2024. Keep a lookout for the announcement from us either here on our website or on our social media pages on Facebook and X

While waiting, the quantum short stories are available for your reading pleasure on our website. Best wishes to all writers!
