Backstory: Root Consciousness

A Q&A with Tony Tsoi, Quantum Shorts finalist

Read the story: Root Consciousness

How did you come up with the idea for your story?

Last December, I read about the research on the quantum characteristics of biophotons. The research can be traced back to the work of Alexander Gurwitsch in 1923 on the mysterious communication between onion roots. In my story, I expanded the idea to include quantum communication between humans and plants.

What was your quantum inspiration?

Without experiments and sophisticated measuring instruments, our species cannot perceive anything beyond what our senses tell us. The discoveries in quantum mechanics demonstrated that we live in a reality that is mostly out of our awareness.

What was your writing process like?

I have written a dozen short stories as course assignments. The premises of my stories are derived from life events I experienced. The first draft is usually completed within one or two days, often early in the morning. The final manuscript takes four to five revisions spanning about a month. My story submitted to Quantum Shorts took about ten days in total.

What is your favourite science-inspired book?

Conjectures and Refutations by Karl Popper, a book I read during my first year in graduate school, has had a lasting impact on me. The notion that a scientific theory must be falsifiable fascinated me. I actually embedded the title of the book in my story.

This is not your first time entering Quantum Shorts. What does being a Quantum Shorts finalist mean to you?

This is my second time entering Quantum Shorts. Since I have never submitted a story to a publisher or another writing contest, being placed as a finalist in this prestigious contest still seems surreal. (Hey, I can keep my success rate at 50% if I never submit again).

Is there anything else you would like to tell us about you or your story?

I took my first online writing course in 2020 and formed a writing group with two classmates. All three of us submitted to Quantum Shorts in 2021 and again this year. One of my writing buddies was the author of a story shortlisted in 2021. Having other writers who can honestly critique and push me has been very helpful in my writing journey.
