Backstory: Clare’s Prism

A Q&A with Dave Chua, Quantum Shorts finalist

Read the story: Clare’s Prism

Can you give a short introduction of yourself?

I’m a lecturer and writer. I’ve done some fiction and scriptwriting and I live in Singapore.

How did you come up with the idea for your story?

I was considering ideas and thought about how you could leave messages. A dollhouse came to mind because I was in a toy store and saw a dollhouse with partially open and closed windows. I watched and listened to videos and podcasts about quantum physics and eventually settled on a couple of ideas. I actually wrote two stories but felt Prism was stronger and entered that.

What was your quantum inspiration?

There were various. Multiverse and superposition were the main ideas that made it. I suppose writing a story is like coming up with different multiverses and selecting one track to go down.

What was your writing process like?

I write in short bursts of twenty minutes. After that, it’s a lot of refinement and fine-tuning.

What is your favourite science-inspired book?

A Brief History of Time by Stephen Hawking, though it’s been a while. I also love Mary Roach’s books. She’s great at making difficult ideas approachable.

What does being a Quantum Shorts finalist mean to you?

It’s a great honour! I’ve read some of the past stories and they are brilliant.

Is there anything else you would like to tell us about you or your story?

I enjoyed writing it and have changed it numerous times. The prism came later after watching YouTube videos from this channel called the Looking Glass Universe which attempted the double slit experiment.
